Restylane, Sculptra and other injectible Fillers
Modern skin fillers can achieve impressive results in nonsurgical facial rejuvenation. They often are highly effective in smoothing wrinkles, erasing lines in the face, and providing lip enhancement -- without the need for surgery. New injectibles are constantly being introduced, and sometimes offer real advances in noninvasive treatments. This page introduces the most popular skin injectibles. You can also read more about the latest trends in skin fillers in Beverly Hills.
Restylane
is a filler that lasts approximately twice as long as collagen and does not require any prior skin allergy testing -- so you can undergo this simple procedure on your first visit.
In this procedure, Restylane is injected under the cheeks to fill in hollowing around the eyes. The effect is immediate and frequently dramatic, and
often provides the sort of cheek lift that previously only could be accomplished with surgery. Restylane is also ideal for quick and easy correction of skin folds around the nose as well as for lip enhancement.
Achieving the look you desire is as easy as it is quick. The result is instantaneous. No previous skin test is needed, which means that you can have the treatment immediately. The session often takes less than thirty
minutes. The time differs somewhat depending on the correction you want to have performed. During treatment, RESTYLANE is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. When injected into the skin, RESTYLANE produces volume that smoothes the wrinkle or fold, shapes the facial contour or enhances the lips in a natural way. The result is immediate. The method of injecting RESTYLANE is fast and safe and leaves no scars or other traces on the face.
Pain Reduction
For wrinkle treatments, pain relief is not required by all patients; however it can be easily arranged at your request. Prior to your procedure, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied to the area to be treated. You can
also choose to have a local anaesthetic injection.
After Treatment
Immediately after the treatment, you can expect a slight redness, swelling, tenderness and an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. When it comes to lip augmentation, the swelling may last longer. Some patients experience swelling for about a week. During this time, the lips can look somewhat uneven. This means that the result directly after the
treatment should not be regarded as the final result. If the discomfort continues or if other reactions occur, you should always contact your practitioner.
A touch-up treatment within 2-4 weeks after the initial treatment may be necessary to achieve an optimal correction.
In charge of your looks
As your face is constantly changing, beauty is best maintained by evaluating the need for further treatment from time to time. With RESTYLANE, you are always in charge of your looks. With RESTYLANE, you always have the
option of continuing or changing the combination of treatments. The treatment can be repeated as often as you like.
Long-lasting, but not permanent
One of the great advantages of RESTYLANE is that it is long-lasting, but not permanent. Unlike permanent treatments or implants, RESTYLANE always leaves you with the option of re-evaluating your needs when the initial effect has worn off. With RESTYLANE, you will always have the option of continuing or changing the combination of treatments. A follow-up can be performed at any time you like after the previous treatment.
Non-animal
As RESTYLANE is a totally non-animal product, there is no risk of eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs. Unlike some other injectable products for wrinkle treatment and
lip enhancement (for example collagen made from cow hide and hyaluronic acid made from rooster combs), RESTYLANE is a totally non-animal product. This means that there is no risk of transmitting disease or eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs.
Gentle and safe
RESTYLANE is a safe product, made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present in the body. RESTYLANE was the first CE-approved, non-animal, stabilized, injectable hyaluronic acid for aesthetic use. As it is free from animal substances, the risk of transmitting diseases from other species is completely eliminated. To date, more than a million treatments have successfully been carried out with RESTYLANE in more than 60 countries worldwide.
Who's using it?
At cutting edge centers, injectible fillers are used to enhance typical locations such as the lips and facial folds as well as performing non-surgical cheek lifting. At Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, this has become known as the Restylane in Beverly Hills.

Sculptra
is a revolutionary, biodegradable, FDA approved, facial filler which acts much like fat injection but without downtime and minimal pain. After a series of approximately three treatments the hollows under the eyes, cheeks and facial deep creases begin to fill in and creating a more youthful facial appearance. Unlike other fillers, the effect lasts for years. Only touch up treatments will be required years later to maintain and improve the results.
In the past, non-ablative (non-wounding) laser skin rejuvenation has been disappointing. After a series of treatments, a large percentage of patients noted minimal or no discernable changes. The alternative, laser skin resurfacing, remains the gold standard for facial rejuvenation, but it does involve wounding the skin, with the need to wear bandages, and a one to two week period to heal.
Although the response of a particular patient cannot be guaranteed, we can now approach the results of the old invasive laser resurfacing without creating any downtime or wounding. This procedure is ideal for younger patients or for those wishing to avoid facelift surgery, time off work, or the risk of a wound.
Frequently Asked Questions About Sculptra
What is Sculptra®?
Sculptra® is a synthetic injectable material known as "poly-L-lactic acid."
Poly-L-lactic acid is biocompatible (a material that does not harm the body)
and biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body). Poly-L-lactic acid
has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue
implants, and other types of implants.
How does Sculptra® work?
Sculptra® is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. Sculptra® provides a gradual increase in skin thickness. Visible results appear within the first few treatment sessions. Sculptra® will not correct the underlying cause of the facial fat loss, but will help improve the appearance by increasing skin thickness in the treated area.
Do I need a skin test before being treated with Sculptra®?
No skin testing is required prior to use.
Are the results from Sculptra® immediate?
No. At your first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra® worked immediately because of swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute Sculptra®. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body, you may look as you did before your treatment. Sculptra® takes time to gradually correct the depression in your skin. Your healthcare provider will see you again in a few weeks to decide if you need
more Sculptra® injections.
How many treatments are required?
Your healthcare provider will decide the appropriate number of treatment sessions and the amount of Sculptra® you will need at each session. Patients with severe facial fat loss may require 3 to 6 treatment sessions.
How long do treatment results last?
Treatment results will differ for each person. In a clinical study, the treatment results lasted for up to 2 years after the first treatment session, in most patients. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect.
Do injections of Sculptra® hurt?
As with any injection, injections with Sculptra® may hurt. Sculptra® is injected in small amounts using a very fine needle. Your healthcare provider may apply a topical or local anesthetic.
What can I expect to happen at a treatment session?
Your healthcare provider will answer all of your questions and prepare you for the treatment.
- Make-up should be removed.
- The area where the injections will be given will be cleaned with an antiseptic.
- You and your healthcare provider will determine if a topical or local anesthetic is needed.
- Sculptra® will be injected in small amounts into the skin using a very fine needle. Multiple injections will be needed.
- An ice pack should be applied to the treatment area to help reduce swelling.
- After the treatment session, the area should be thoroughly massaged to distribute the product evenly.
What can I expect after treatment?
Immediately following a treatment session with Sculptra®, redness, swelling, pain, bruising or all of these signs can happen in the treatment area. These signs usually go away in a few hours to a few days. Some have been
known to last up to 17 days. Your healthcare provider will give you specific post-treatment care instructions. You should massage the treated area (a few times each day) for several days after the treatment session. Within the
first 24 hours after treatment, an ice pack should be applied for a few minutes at a time to the treatment area to help reduce swelling. Wrap the ice in a cloth and avoid putting ice directly on your skin. Avoid excessive sun and
UV lamp exposure until any initial swelling and redness has resolved. Report any worsening or longer-lasting symptoms or signs to your healthcare provider.
How quickly can I get back to my daily activities?
Most patients feel comfortable going back to their normal activities following treatment.
When will I be able to apply make-up after treatment?
Make-up may be applied a few hours after treatment if no complications are present (for example, open wounds or bleeding).
What are the possible side effects of treatment with Sculptra®?
The most common side effects with the use of Sculptra® include injection-related side effects at the site of the injection such as bleeding, tenderness or pain, redness, bruising, or swelling. These side effects generally last, on average, 3 to 17 days.
One possible delayed side effect with Sculptra® can be small bumps under the skin in the treated area. These small bumps may not be visible, and you may notice them only when you press on the treated skin. These bumps tend to happen within the first 6 to 12 months after the first treatment. Occasionally, these bumps go away on their own. Visible bumps, sometimes with redness or color change to the treated area, have also been reported.
As with all procedures that involve an injection through the skin, there is a risk of infection. Report any side effects to your healthcare provider.
Who should not use Sculptra®?
You should not use Sculptra® if you are allergic to any ingredient of Sculptra®. Talk to your healthcare provider about your medical history when deciding on treatment options.
